The ‘No Poo’ Hair Experiment- Day 15

It’s Day 15, halfway through my ‘No Poo’ Experiment. The scalp seems to have calm down a little and I managed to reduce my hair washings to 4 times a week. However I did notice the hair will be like hay right after washing, though it tends to get better as it dries out and looks ok the next day.

For the dry ends, I massage a little hair serum into the ends. Most blogs advocate coconut oil or jojoba, but I just decided to use whatever I had on hand. I did check the label to ensure it doesn’t contain any silicones, apparently that will interfere with the No poo method. The hair actually does look better and requires very little styling. When I wake up, it curls nicely and I jus have to comb and get to work.
But I realized you have to let the hair air dry properly and thoroughly. And now I have change it slightly to just using ACV on the length of the hair instead of pouring it over the head.

Up till now I am still a bit ambivalent on whether I will continue this when the month is up. Reason being Singapore is super hot and humid, so I sometimes do miss the feel of shampoo clean hair. But I also want to find a method to tackle the scalp, so I will try another 2 weeks and see how it goes.

The ‘No Poo’ Hair Experiment- Day 8

It’s Day 8 of my hair experiment, still not really successful thus far. There’s only one day where I made it to not washing for 3 days but most of the times, 2 days were max for me. And I wonder is it because I’m in hot and humid Singapore. You jus tend to perspire more.
I also miss the feeling of squeaky clean hair. My hair is starting to turn really dry at the length, but still greasy at the roots. Yikes!

But you can see the sides actually look normal and dry.

I read in some blogs that the hair goes through some re-calibrating phase for the first 2 weeks where your hair alternate between super dry and super greasy, so I really hope this is the case.
I’m gonna try another 3 weeks. I think one month is a realistic length for the experiment, and if it still doesn’t work, maybe ‘No Poo’ is just not for me.
On the plus side, I did notice less hair fall in the shower. Not sure if it is a result of No Poo or just the fact that I’m washing my hair less so less breakage?

Have you tried ‘No Poo’?
Do share your experiences with me.

Have a great week ahead! 🙂

The ‘No Poo’ Hair Experiment- Day 4

Ok I mentioned that I will only update in a few weeks but I read somewhere its gd to keep a hair journal so you know what’s going on as this whole no poo is sometimes trial and error so I decided to post this.
I caved in and washed my hair 3 times in past 4 days. I know I am supposed to wash like 3-4 days but I really couldn’t take it. Well the second time was coz I was due to sign the offer letter and I really can’t turn up at my new work place with oily hair. But in my haste I didn’t use one cup of baking soda mix and I think it really made a difference. I can feel my hair was getting oily and last night I tried the dry shampoo method. I used talcum powder which soak up the grease and went to bed.
This morning, my hair look ok but by night time it was starting to look limp and abit greasy and so I washed it just now.

This time round, I took care to use the entire cup. I pre-mix the solutions coz I am quite lazy and I think maybe the baking soda that I added was lesser than less time, hence it’s not working so well. Anyway I shall see how the hair turns out tomorrow. And though its still oily at the roots it’s also getting very dry.

I don’t know if its my imagination but I feel the hair seems to drop less during showering. I will see how it goes for the next few days.

The Art of Analyzing a Job Offer

I’ve found a job! 2 weeks ago, suddenly I had a few interviews to go and was really lucky to receive 2 job offers and finally accepted with one company.
Prior to that, there was a lot of nail biting when placed in that dilemma of which company to choose that I decided to write this post.

When the company first offer you a job, don’t be inclined to accept right on the spot. Rather, let them know you will think about it. Tell them nicely and reiterate that you are very enthusiastic about the firm, just that you need some time to consider or discuss with your partner or family.

At that time, I was waiting for the other company A to get back to me. Actually, I had no idea the other company will offer, but I just wanted to ensure I’m totally out of their hiring process before I accept with company B.

So imagine my surprise and dilemma when Company A offered as well. I decided to sit down and analyze both offers. I searched online for several methods but I really like this one best.

Make a list of Pros and Cons for each company. What you like about the company and what you are hesitant about that company. E.g: one of the Pros can be reputable company and one of the Cons can be long commute.
Then score each Pro and each con on a scale of 1-10 on how important that factors is to you.
Total up the Pros and Cons column and subtract them. The final score is the score for that company.

Example:

Pros.
– Reputable Company – 9
– Career Prospects – 8
– Office Hours – 7
Total: 24

Cons
– Office Politics – 7
– Long Commute – 6
Total: 13

Final score: 24-13= 11

I liked this method as it made me realise that though there are a lot of Pros for Company B, there are also alot of Cons in my perspective which in effect resulted in a lower total score for Company B. I really liked Company B’s stuff, however it’s a small company and there’s a need to work retail hours. Thus there were more uncertainties with the job. On the other hand, Company A seems like a safer choice.

After discussing with the Partner, I decided to accept Company A’s offer, though the overall package is actually lower than my expected pay. Well, I guess I could have tried negotiating for a higher pay, but my bad experience with L who developed very high expectations of me after I asked for a higher starting pay also made me cautious and I just want to complete my job search.

I’m actually quite apprehensive and really hope I made the right decision. After making my decision, I called Company B immediately to inform them and I’m glad the boss was really nice about it.

Looking back, I must say I am very blessed to have found a job so soon. I have expected the job search to take some time and was getting dejected.
It’s not a job in design which I initially wanted to go into. There are very few design jobs in Singapore and lately I have also been questioning myself that would I be happy if I went with a design job? I guess I won’t know, the declining bank balance and impending flat payments made me just choose this job in the end, rather than keep holding out for a design job.

So a new journey will begin next month!

The ‘No Poo’ Hair experiment- Day 2

Well I wake up this morning and my hair looks really good. It’s a little dry at the ends so I added some hair serum to the ends. Other than that, it looks great. There was a little itch on the scalp last night and I wonder if its due to me not rinsing out the ACV well enough.
I did more research last night and there are accounts that the hair may look great for 2 weeks n then it will be bad, so hopefully not.
I don’t know if baking soda will harm the hair anot. Some say it doesn’t, as the Apple cider vinegar rinse will balance it out, but some say it makes the hair more porous and brittle in the long run so time will tell. Hopefully it doesn’t damage my hair.
It seems the water hardness also plays a factor into whether this will be successful anot. Your water can’t be too hard and if it is, I read a suggestion to boil it with the baking soda first and wait for it to cool down then use it as per usual.
Also, it seems more suitable for those who don’t wash their hair every day. Under this experiment, you are supposed to wash your hair every 3-4 days. I will update again in a few weeks to see if my hair improves

The ‘No Poo’ Hair experiment

I was really intrigued by a Facebook post that I saw about going shampoo free and using only Baking Soda and Apple Cider Vinegar that I went to try it. My hair gets greasy pretty fast, so I have to wash it every day or every two days else it will look like a disaster.
My main reason of trying this out is simply wanting to find a solution to my hair. I tried various shampoos and I still can’t find the right one for my hair, so I hope this works.
What you do is mix two tablespoons of baking soda in 500ml of water or you half that if you have short hair like me. Then rinse it out and then follow with one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar mix with 500ml of water and rinse it out.
Well since its my first try I forgot to rinse out the acv, however the smell dissipates really fast and I googled a few blogs and there are people who don’t rinse it out, so I hope there is no damage to my hair.
I’m sitting here typing this blog and the hair is still in the process of air-drying. What I liked about the baking soda solution is that it gets rid of the grease really fast. I really want to try the no wash experiment where you don’t wash your hair at all for a month. They say it really allows the hair to regain its natural balance and stop over producing sebum. However, I think I will look really disgusting if i try that, so I will try it in future during my confinement month, after giving birth, where based on popular chinese belief you are not supposed to wash your hair for a month any way. I will update the results again for this experiment after trying for a while. ^^
